Richard was lucky enough to be able to compete in the inaugural London T100.  This featured a challenging lineup of a 2k swim, 80k bike ride, and an 18k run.

With a 6:35 AM start time, it was an early morning, but I was fortunate to have a hotel within walking distance of the Excel venue, making things a bit easier!

After racking my bike the day before and catching the women's pro race, the morning felt relaxed, and I found myself in the water before I knew it. The swim consisted of two laps; it was busy but manageable, and I exited the water in 42 minutes, right on target.

Transition was lengthy, but soon I was on the bike for the three-lap course that circled Excel and headed up to Westminster. I had to navigate plenty of potholes and speed bumps, and by halfway through, it was only 9 AM but already hot with clear blue skies. I tried to pace myself on the bike to save some energy for the run. I completed the 80k in 2 hours and 30 minutes, averaging 20 mph.

After another long transition, I hit the run course, which consisted of six laps over 18k. There were plenty of aid stations to help me stay hydrated and cool down, which was crucial. The run got busier as Olympic distance athletes joined us, and my loyal supporter kept me updated on my standings. I was informed that I was in 4th place in my age group, which motivated me to push harder!

After four laps, I had climbed to 2nd place, but I was told catching the leader would be a challenge. I reminded myself that it was only 18k—Felicity was doing 42k! I finished the run in 1 hour and 36 minutes, wrapping up the entire race in just 46 seconds over 5 hours.

I ended up 2nd in my age group and 338th out of 708 overall. The trophy awarded later was rather underwhelming, but it was presented by Kat Matthews, who I had watched come in 3rd the day before. That made the award feel special and truly made all the hard work worthwhile!

Overall, it was an incredible experience, and I’m proud of my performance!
